Where We Started

50 Years ago, Jostar Interiors was founded by Joanna Starko, who continues today as the firm’s principal designer. Joanna first started as a solo entrepreneur because she wanted the opportunity to do what she loved and created the perfect job for herself. She had always been drawn to the design field and wanted to work with the elements she loves – colours, fabrics, textures, art, to create amazing spaces. Starting with a loan to buy equipment, sewing machines, and set up a workroom at her first location. Growing her business based on client needs the business evolved from drapery and fabric to a full-service interior design and renovation firm. Over the years our clients have been at the heart of the business with many of them returning time and time again.

At the end of the day, we want to improve people’s lives by creating beautiful and functional spaces for them to live. This is the core of what we do and what drives our designers. Interior design is more than just making things pretty – our environment has an impact on our day to day lives and health. We pride ourselves in custom curated spaces that reflect our clients.

Joanna is the founder of Jostar Interiors Ltd. Her passion for good design, her wealth of knowledge and over 40 years of experience, have earned Joanna a reputation as an expert in the design and renovation industry.

Leona Malkowich, RIC

Leona’s multitasking skills have been keeping everyone on track for over a decade.

Anne Wilson, RIC

Anne was excited to return to Jostar. She brings enthusiasm and a wealth of experience, including over 7 years of kitchen design.

Interesting Fact: In her course of studies at the University of Alberta, Anne took the History of Furnishings class FOUR times because she loved it so much.

Pat Gruber, IDT

Interior Design Consultant

Pat is a senior designer with the company for over 20 years and has a great following of loyal clients that recognize her talent and experience.

Interesting Fact: Pat’s four-legged, furry assistant “Willy”, is often caught peeking in on her projects.

Kathleen Janssens, Arch Tech

Interior Design Consultant

As a trained Architectural Technologist, I began my career with an Architect and then moved to the City of Edmonton in Engineering. For the past 10 years, I’ve worked with Design Build Firms, focusing on new builds, infills, and renovations in Edmonton and surrounding areas. I love designing kitchens and living rooms, where much of family life happens. I have a keen eye for balance, practicality, and functionality in both interior and exterior spaces. My specialty is creating 3-D renderings to help clients visualize their projects before construction. My favorite design style is mid-century modern, and I dream of restoring a mid-century property with a modern twist.

Ashley Fedyna, IDT

Interior Design Consultant

Ashley is a graduate in Fine Arts and Interior Design Technology. She uses her talents in residential and commercial design projects. Her computer skills, including digital 3D drawings, "wows" our clients.

Interesting Fact: Ashley started art lessons when she was only 6 years old and definitely has an artsy side.
