Top 5 Cost Factors When Renovating Your Bathroom In Edmonton, St. Albert or Sherwood Park

Bathroom renovations in Edmonton & area can be a great investment in your home by improving functionality of the space, increasing your homes value and getting a great return on your investment.  With 25% of homeowners planning to undertake a bath renovation in the next year, according to recent Fincanceit research, now is a great time to start preparing.

At Jostar Interiors our designers are asked all the time “How much will my renovation cost?” it might be a bit cheeky, but we typically reply “Well, how much does a car cost?” and the answer to both of those questions is “That depends”.

“The ROI on a bathroom renovation when done well is 62% on average.”

There are several factors that go into the cost of a renovation that can impact the overall cost.  According to NerdWallet the factors affecting the cost of a bathroom renovation are:

1. The size and type of the bathroom

For obvious reasons the size of the bathroom will impact the cost.  Are you renovating just a powder room or the principal bathroom? Renovation costs for a principal bathroom tend to be the highest since they increase resale value and have the greatest impact on client’s day to day life. The square footage of the space also has an impact as more materials will be needed.

2. Home Renovation vs. Home Remodel

Are we gutting the entire bathroom, moving plumbing, making the space larger? Or are we just painting, replacing countertops and faucets.  How far you take the scope of work will dramatically impact the renovation budget and the bathroom renovation cost.  Depending on the age of the home and the condition of the existing bathroom may guide you as to how much work you will need to undertake.

3. Quality of Bathroom Fixtures and Materials

What you choose to put in the bathroom will also contribute to the cost.  The cost of the materials should not be the sole determining factor of choosing it or not.  The quality of the materials and/or warranty should be considered.  Too cheap of a product and you may end up having to replace it sooner or have a higher maintenance cost which it typically seen with cheap plumbing fixtures.

4. Cost of Labour Bathroom Renovation

It is important to keep in mind the budget for your bathroom renovation is not just for materials but labour as well.  Through our extensive experience in designing and renovating bathrooms on average the split between materials and labour is roughly 50/50.  If you are looking at spending $10,000 on materials budget to spend $10,000 on labour.

5. Return on Investment: Bathroom Renovation

While both renovation and remodel costs can be significant, they do add value to your home.  Consider this when planning your bathroom renovation budget.  According to a recent Re/Max Renovation Investment Report a bathroom makeover is one of the best renovations to do since it has such a high return on investment (ROI).  With more than half of Canadians citing renovating their home for personal enjoyment and the ROI on a bathroom renovation when done well is 62% on average.

We’d like to focus on that statement for a moment about the renovation being “done well”.  An interior designer should be part of your renovation budget to ensure you maximize that return on your investment – simply slapping up renovation materials with no thought to detail, cohesiveness and level of finishes may negatively impact the value of that renovation and your home.  A coordinated and professionally renovated bathroom will bring in the largest ROI.  Does using a designer increase the value of your bathroom renovation? YES!
